Elephants have the best sense of smell

After studying 13 species of mammals, scientists have come to the conclusion that elephants have the best sense of smell.

To identify the olfactory capabilities of different mammals, researchers examined genome sequences from 13 placental mammals and has established more than 10 thousand genes in total. The African elephant had the most extensive olfactory bundle: almost 2,000 olfactory receptor genes. Except for the elephant and humans were studied in horses, Guinea pigs, rabbits, rodents, cows and chimpanzees.

According to the researchers, the African elephant can detect water from far away and use their olfactory ability to detect predators, find food or a partner at a large distance. The man won in this competition last place. Dr. Yoshihito Niimura of the University of Tokyo says: "Apparently, an elephant's nose is not only long, but also qualitative. A comparison of genes among mammals gives us knowledge about the similarities and differences of olfactory perception, deepening our understanding of the sense of smell in humans".
