Jamaica has built the world’s largest hybrid solar-wind power plant

WindStream Technologies has built a hybrid power plant on the roof of an office building in Kingston, Jamaica. The power plant operates in the wind and sunlight. It is expected to be capable of generating more than 106,000 kWh per year.

WindStream Technologies specializes in the production of wind generators and solar panels that can be installed on commercial and municipal buildings, as well as in private homes. In the new project, 50 SolarMill devices were used. It is a plant that consists of three or more wind turbines and one or more solar panels. The array is expected to be capable of generating 55 kW of solar power and 25 kW of wind power. The project could pay off in the next four years, saving about $2 million over its estimated 25-year lifespan.

This is not the only “world’s largest” project aimed at using renewable energy sources. In January, a solar bridge opened in London; in April, Jaguar completed the installation of the world’s largest rooftop solar panel; next month, the world’s largest solar thermal power plant will be fully operational.
