High-Tech sunflower IBM is the source of fresh water and solar energy

IBM engineers presented a hybrid system to produce clean energy and the mechanism of desalination. The device, the creators were inspired by the shape of a sunflower, are equipped with a parabolic dish with an area of 40 square meters, made from patented fiber material. The latter gives similar to the aluminium mechanical properties, but is 20% cheaper.

The inner part of the dish is covered with 36 elliptic mirrors made of a polymeric film with silver coating. This mirrored surface concentrates the solar study, reflecting it on receivers with microchannel liquid cooling. Receivers are covered by a variety of photovoltaic cells, each of which having an area of about a square centimeter could produce 57 watts per hour on a Sunny day.

Trying to think through every last detail, the engineers created a large transparent plastic case for mirrors and receivers, which protects them from rain and dust, and also allows you to avoid a burn hazard to birds and other animals. Another useful feature of the system is the mechanism of desalination of H2O, which allows you to generate 30-40 liters of drinkable water per square meter of receiver per day.
