The urban structure of algae to produce oxygen
This structure is able to produce that amount of oxygen that is able to produce about 200 square meters of forest plantations. The draft Urban Algae Canopy combines elements of architecture, biology and digital technologies with the aim of creating energy and improving environmental conditions.
The project was created by Studio EcoLogics and first shown to the public in Milan, Italy. This "world's first bio-digital dome brings together the culture of micro-algae and digital protocols of cultivation in real-time within a unique architectural system. Sunlight increases photosynthesis, which leads to staining of the structures in green. In addition to the reduction in air emissions of CO2, the dome can daily produce more than 150 kg of biomass – and all this in a passive system, which requires much less space and investment compared to the usual us urban landscaping.
A hybrid architectural and ecosystem design this dome is designed to adapt its functions for a given scenario, and based on changes in the environment. This allows users to exercise control over the activities of the natural supply through the digital interface. "Despite the fact that the process is more biological in nature, these microalgae are very adaptable and responsive to questions posed artificially change, and this means that the user can make adjustments in real time."
For the company EcoLogics is only a step towards more serious projects – the creation of organic systems tied to high-tech developments to create infrastructures and cities of the future. All this will allow to erase the boundaries between urban and rural areas, residential neighborhoods and natural landscapes. In the project of the dome has been used recently developed techniques of construction and special materials Studio EcoLogics: "the Exceptional properties of microalgae significantly enhanced under special cultivation on the basis of three-layer ETFE system, which creates a protective shell. All this allows us to do biological mass responsive to changes in the environment, so the use of the latest technologies, combining digital design and biological materials, is becoming a reality today."
These developments can be used to create efficient vertical farms, purification of urban air smog and to saturate the city's air with oxygen in General.published
