Daily life untouched by civilization of the Mentawai people

This tribe is completely cut off from the modern world. The Mentawai people are about 64,000 people living on islands west of Sumatra, Indonesia. They can be distinguished by characteristic tattoos and dwellings decorated with skulls of animals obtained during hunting. In case of any problems, misfortunes, or illnesses, they call their healers, who “communicate with spirits.”

The amazing photos that you will see here tell about the daily life of men, women and children from the Mentawai tribe – a people that preserves its traditions in its original form and keeps a respectful distance from the modern world.

The photos were taken by 42-year-old professional photographer Mohammad Saleh Bin Dolla from Malaysia, who managed to win the favor and trust of the inhabitants of the island. He spent about a month with them.

“Their women walk on the island completely without clothes, and their lives are completely dependent on natural resources.”

The tribe consists of about 64,000 people who live in dwellings made of bamboo, wood and grass and decorated with the skulls of animals they killed while hunting.

The social life of the Mentawai people is concentrated within clans numbering from 30 to 80 people. The center of this life are long general buildings.

They believe that all life on Earth has a soul, including plants. And the only “specialist” there is a local doctor who “communicates with souls and spirits.” By means of these contacts with the invisible world, he cures diseases and relieves other misfortunes, and restores harmony to the life of his people.

“I was very lucky – a friend of mine actually lived with the Mentawais for quite a long time and asked me for help,” he said.

In most men, the islanders see heroes, and everyone here looks happy.

They like to be visited by visitors from the outside world because they like to show off their lifestyle and their island.
