Astronomy telescope of the Academy of Sciences "RATAN-600"

Yesterday and today a number of major foreign and domestic media have reported fixing of a powerful radio signal from the system HD164595, the constellation of Hercules, which could be of extraterrestrial origin. Depending on the level of principles of resource use different kinds of headings, ranging from "Astronomers have recorded an anomalous signal from space" to "Scientists have discovered a signal aliens."

The signal was recorded by the Russian Observatory of the RATAN-600 located in Karachay-Cherkessia and concerning the Special astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Sao RAS).

Some doubts of this news originated in a time when the original source was an Amateur astronomer, who through a friend, allegedly, fell into the hands of the scientific work of Russian researchers.

Of course, the "source" did not contain any reference to the work itself, which should only be published on 27 September this year at the international conference of IAC. Except for a few screenshots of the charts and of the author's claims about the "sensationalism" of observation, no evidence was.

It should be noted that similar observations had already been carried out on the RATAN-600 in the beginning (link to work) and then the scientists came to the unequivocal conclusion:



It was a little strange, why is information about such a serious observation was published by an Amateur astronomer. For comments we turned to the Russian Academy of Sciences and received the following response from the employee (Astro space center Lebedev physical Institute, Yuri Kovalev:

30 Aug 2016 number of media reports emerged about a possible detection at the RATAN-600 radio signal associated with the activities of extraterrestrial civilizations, therefore we consider it necessary to give an official comment.

In the past several years, the staff of SINP MSU (Institute of nuclear physics named after D. V. Moscow state University, Moscow state University) together with employees of the Sao RAS conducted a search operation in the study of astronomical objects — candidates for SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). SETI is the General name for projects and activities for the search of extraterrestrial civilizations. The program is focused on finding the radiation of artificial origin. Research is being conducted on the radio telescope RATAN-600 with the use of broadband continuum radiometers in the frequency range of 1-22.7 GHz. Conduct such observations at the RATAN-600 was made possible due to the large collecting surface of a thousand square meters, which is a high sensitivity telescope allows you to search for extremely weak radio signals in the Universe, which include the objects of SETI. The objects of study for this program, are sun-like stars with planets and sun-like stars, where the presence of planets is unknown.

In the framework of this program in 2015 from one of the objects (HD164595 star system in the constellation Hercules) had detected an interesting signal at the wavelength of 2.7, see Processing and analysis of the signal revealed that with high probability, it is still a signal of earthly origin.

With regard to other objects of study at the RATAN-600 at the moment too early to talk about reliably obtained scientific results. Measurements can assess the radio-emission regions of interest only for the upper limit of detection. With confidence we can say that the search signal is still not detected.Relying on unreliable information from dubious source, the number of English language resources from around the world, as well as domestic media, with a high degree of confidence announced the adoption of a signal of extraterrestrial origin, which is not true.
