October 31, 2003, the then 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton, a champion in his age among surfers amateur lost her left arm in an attack by a tiger shark off the northern coast of the island of Kauai, in a group of Hawaiian Islands.
10 weeks after this terrible incident Bethany have been training again. In 2004 she was awarded the sports awards ESPY Best Comeback Athlete of the Year («The best return"). The fact that the absence of one hand complicates surfing - it becomes more difficult to keep balance, stopped Bethany and her desire to compete on an equal basis with other surfers. After the accident, Bethany Hamilton won three major surfing competitions and many times reached the final part. At the last event Reef Hawaiian Pro surfing contest she reached the quarterfinals on.
