Every third Russian believes that the sun revolves around the Earth, and not vice versa





Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) has decided to conduct a study on the most common scientific misconceptions of our fellow citizens. Published on its website the results really make you think.

Experts VTsIOM polled from 29 to 30 January 2011 1,600 people in 138 villages in 46 regions and republics of the country.

It turned out that every third Russian believes that the sun revolves around the Earth, and not vice versa. In recent years, these respondents was a few percent more. Other misconceptions read as follows: radioactivity - the handiwork of men (55%); Antibiotics kill viruses as well as bacteria (46%); people lived in the era of the dinosaurs (29%).

One in five of those surveyed believe that a complete revolution around the sun, our planet makes for one month, and the child's sex is determined only maternal genes. Allegations "electrons are smaller than atoms" and "current humans evolved from earlier species of man" as a wrong 18% and 17% of respondents. According to VTsIOM, women often voiced scientific errors than men.
