Well Chand Baori





Well built from VIII to IX century king Chand dynasty Nikumba to the surrounding areas have been provided with a reliable source of water. Greenish water at the bottom of the well indicates that the well is now no one uses it, but this place is interesting as an architectural landmark, which is over 1,000 years old. It is adjacent to the well temple, which is also of interest for tourists.



Step wells are called in Hindi Baudi or baori are a unique phenomenon in India. The sides of these grooves are both steps in which people descend and ascend to fetch water with a full jug. A lot more steps than necessary for the operation of the well, apparently, they are primarily of architectural significance.



Geometrically complex system of stairs and steps ensured that the Rajputs have access to water from all sides at any time of the year. Reasons for the creation of such a complex structure is not well understood.





Some believe that it was used to collect water. Rajasthan - arid region, and therefore, it is important every drop of precious water. Big mouth of the well functioned like a funnel to collect rainwater, which flowed freely down the stairs.





In addition to the intended purpose, Chand Baori also served as a gathering place for residents of Abhaneri. Citizens used well in the hot summer days, to sit on the steps, chatting with each other. At the bottom of the well temperature at 5-6 degrees lower than the top.



Stages are located on three sides of Chand Baori, and on the fourth side housed residential and business premises. Their walls are decorated with beautiful sculptures niches on religious and mythological themes. It housed the royal residence with rooms for the king and queen, and a stage for showcasing the performing arts.



Chand Baori was featured in the movie "Outland» (The Fall), and also appeared for a few seconds in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises» (The Dark Knight Rises).





An architectural monument is administered by the Office of Archaeology in India.
