Deep well in the world- Kola ultradeep
The deepest borehole in the world - Kola ultradeep is 10 km from the town of Polar in the Murmansk region. Its depth - 12262 meters.
History of the deepest wells started in 60 years, when the confrontation between the USSR and the United States was in everything, including the achievements of science and technology. American experts in ultradeep drilling, organized in the Caribbean, were able to pass only 183 meters. Then they could not go because of the fact that the Boers were in pure basalt (a type of granite), and just burned from the heat. To continue drilling required significant investment. The project was closed. Learning about the failure of Americans Khrushchev allowed the financing of the project super-deep well.
The design depth - 15 km. After a long election point of drilling in 1970, drilling began. About three thousand scientists, workers, professionals have lived and worked well.
To a depth of 7 km reached only after four years, using the serial rig. It was then replaced with specially made more powerful installation. Once reached a depth of 7 km, drilling was complicated, a lot of cavities (small cavities), frequent accidents.

Ten years spent on tunneling to a depth of 12 km. After reaching this mark, the accident occurred, which resulted in the drilling started again with a mark of 7 km. Finally, six years later in 1990 again reached the 12 km mark. Drill more than 12262 m could not - have begun an accident, refuses appliances. In 1992, the drilling stopped.

The most precious cargo found at a depth of - 1, 5 km, is copper ore deposits. At a depth of 3 km of soil composition is very similar to the soil delivered to the moon. Since the depth of 10 km were discovered signs of gold content: one ton of rock - one gram. The temperature at the depth of 5 km, more than 70 degrees, 7 km - 120 degrees, 12 km - 220 degrees.

But the most surprising is that in the late 80's, a Finnish newspaper wrote an article about it, scientists at a depth of 12 km, with microphones recorded and heard screams and moans. This story was picked up American television channel started the birth of a legend under the name "The road to hell." So called Kola ultradeep wells.
Nowadays, abandoned drilling equipment dismantled, Russian science is simply no money for this unique project.
