Wombats live in southern and eastern Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania. Distributed in different habitats, but in need of a suitable ground for burrowing.
Wombats - the largest of modern mammals involved rytёm and spending most of their lives underground. With its sharp claws, they dig in the ground a small cave dwelling, which sometimes form complex Tunnel system. Typically, most of them reach of about 20 meters in length and 3 to 5 meters in depth. If portions of individuals intersect, caves can be used at different times by different wombats. Wombats are active at night, when they go in search of food. During the day they rest in their shelters.
Their life expectancy in nature is 15 years in captivity, and they sometimes live to 25.
Wombats family includes three modern species, the merging of two kinds:
Sherstonosye wombats (Lasiorhinus)
Queensland wombat (Lasiorhunus krefftii)
longhair wombat (Lasiorhunus latifrons) [1]
Golonosye wombats (Vombatus)
shorthair wombat (Vombatus ursinus)
Also known five extinct genera wombats. Wombats appeared about 18 million years ago, during the Miocene. The closest relatives of the wombats - members of the family of marsupials bears (koalas). They have wombats are many similarities in the structure of the teeth, skull and sperm. However, there are a number of morphological differences, indicating that the evolutionary line koalas and wombats diverged about 36 million years ago.
In general - terribly funny little animal)))
