Lens clouds over Antarctica

The lenticular (or lenticular) clouds over Antarctica are a rare and fascinating phenomenon. Such clouds have the form of smooth “tapes” or “lenses”, often resemble flying saucers and are created due to the special conditions of air currents.

In Antarctica, strong winds and a cold climate create ideal conditions for the formation of lenticular clouds, when air masses meet obstacles, such as mountains. Air rises, cools and condenses to form such clouds. Because of their unusual appearance, lens clouds often attract attention and look especially spectacular against the backdrop of the vast white landscapes of Antarctica.
