The tragedy occurred in the morning in 1988. Cargo train from Dzerzhinsk in Kazakhstan, among other things, three cars imported industrial explosives weighing 118 tons. The explosion occurred at 9:32 am when the train approached the station "Arzamas-1" of the Gorky Railway.

Among detonated explosives were special charges for oil, 30 tons of TNT blocks, 30 tons of RDX, 27 tons of HMX, also on ammonal and ammonia. The explosion was so strong that in its place remained a funnel depth of 26 meters. For comparison, it's about the height of a 9-storey building. But all this can not be compared with the number of victims.

In that terrible tragedy killed 91 people, including 17 children. Another 800 people were injured. The explosion destroyed about 150 homes, as well as destroyed and partially damaged 160 industrial and commercial facilities, 69 shops, 14 schools and 49 orphanages. That put 823 people were left without a roof over their head.

Officially, the cause of the explosion was violation of safety when transporting explosives. However, there are alternate versions of what happened. Thus, the locals seriously believe that the purpose of the explosion were whipping instability in the USSR and inflicting maximum damage Arzamas.

Moreover, the first assumption is partially confirmed train accident that occurred near Ufa exactly one year later, when in 1989 at the time of oncoming passage of two passenger trains "Adler - Novosibirsk" and "Novosibirs-Adler" was a massive explosion, which killed, according to various estimates, from 575 up to 645 people. According to the official version, the explosion occurred due to leakage of gas products from passing close to the pipeline routes "Western Siberia - Ural - Volga region". The gas accumulated in the lowlands at the ways and exploded in sparks, which apparently formed as a result of inhibition of one of the trains.

But back to the events in Arzamas. The government commission, who worked at the blast site in a few months, has not been able to establish the exact cause of the explosion.

Now at the blast site is a memorial with the names of all those killed and the chapel. Every year on June 4 in Arzamas held ceremonies in memory of the victims of the tragedy.

Everything on this.

Unfortunately, Arzamasskaya railway tragedy was not the first and not the last. This year alone, Russia has undergone just three train accidents. The last of them - 23 May for 1946 kilometer of Zlatoust - Urzhumka with 15 gondola cars derailed a freight train. Fortunately, the incident did without victims.
