Aral Sea - endorheic salt lake-sea in Central Asia

Aral Sea - endorheic salt lake-sea in Central Asia, on the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Since 1960-ies of XX century was shallow at an accelerating rate due to diversion of water from the main supply of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers for irrigation purposes.

In 1960, the Aral Sea was the fourth largest lake in the world, occupying about 68 thousand sq. km, but due to the fact that the water of the rivers flowing into the sea, was diverted to irrigation, it was shallow. In 1989, the sea split into two isolated pond - Northern (Small) and Southern (Big) Aral Sea. For 2003, the surface area of the Aral Sea is about a quarter of the original, and the volume of water - about 10%.

Ctoki with local fields caused deposits of pesticides and various other agricultural pesticides, emerging places to 54 thousand sq. Km of dry seabed covered with salt. Dust storms spread salt, dust and toxic chemicals at a distance of 500 km. Sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and sodium sulfate airborne and destroy or slow the development of natural vegetation and crops.

The local population suffers from a high incidence of respiratory diseases, anemia, cancer of the throat and esophagus, as well as digestive disorders. Participation liver and kidney disease, eye disease.

In 2001, as a result of water leaving the island connected to the mainland of the Renaissance. On this island, the Soviet Union tested biological weapons: anthrax, tularemia, brucellosis, plague, typhus, smallpox, and botulinum toxin were tested here on horses, monkeys, sheep, donkeys and other laboratory animals. This is the cause of fear that the deadly microorganisms retained viability, and infected rodents may be their distributors in other regions.

According to calculations of scientists, save the Aral Sea is no longer possible. Even if completely abandon the diversion of water from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, the previous level of water in it will be restored not earlier than 200 years.

In the 90s it was decided to save at least the Small Aral Sea, the water from which flowed in the Large Aral. For this was was postorena dams with the gate (it allows you to skip the excess water to adjust the reservoir). Small Sea area increased slightly, and salinity decreased.
