In Wiltshire, England, 120ft below the surface, lies Burlington, better known as the "Cold War" City - a 35-acre underground complex built in the 1950s in the home of conservative Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and 4,000 civil servants in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack.
It was equipped with the second-largest telephone exchange in England and a BBC studio, from where the Prime Minister can broadcast what is left of the people. The underground power plant system would be powered by 100,000 lamps that lit its streets and guided the way pubs modeled on Red Lion in Whitehall.
Spurs railway was built in a tunnel on the main London to the Bristol line, linking it to a bunker. It was designed to evacuate the royal family from London in the event of an attack.
“the very existence of the bunker should have been top secret until it was decommissioned in 2004. Inside, it's like stepping back 50 years. Hundreds of rotating chairs are still unpacked in 1959. There are boxes of service glass ashtray, a bathroom brush and civilian sets of tea service. Photos of the Queen, Princess Margaret and Grace Kelly are attached to the walls. "
