Vardzia - cave monastery complex XII-XIII centuries in southern Georgia, Javakheti. Outstanding monument of medieval Georgian architecture. Located in the Aspindza district of Samtskhe-Javakheti province, in the valley of the river Mtkvari (Kura), about 100 km south of the town of Borjomi, near the village of the same name.
Over 900 m along the left bank of the Kura River in the steep mountain wall tuff Erusheti (Bear) is carved up to 600 spaces: churches, chapels, living cells, storerooms, baths, refectory, treasuries, libraries . The premises of the complex go to 50 meters deep rock and rise to a height of eight floors. Kept secret passages linking the premises, the remains of the aqueduct and irrigation system.
In the center of the monastery is the main church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Temple hall type is blocked Korobov vault (in girth arches) and decorated with pilasters on the walls - the unique mural paintings (including images of King George III and Queen Tamar, 1180-ies., Master George). Great historical and artistic value are the frescoes of the Assumption of Our Lady of the Assumption and the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ.
