In Antarctica, found the largest in 25 years meteorite


An international team of scientists working at the Belgian Antarctic research station "Princess Elizabeth", found a meteorite weighing 18 kg.
 

It is the largest meteorite found in the region since 1988. The fragment was found on January 28 this year. In total, during the 40-day expedition, researchers found 425 meteorites with a total weight of 75 kg.

The search took place in the vicinity of the ice field Nansen, located at an altitude of 2.9 thousand. M per 140 km south of the research station.

Preliminary analysis of the 18-pound meteorite showed that it is an ordinary chondrite, the most common type of meteorites. At the moment, the object passed to study Japanese art.
