The eruption of Mount Etna

Sicilian volcano Etna on Sunday night illuminated yellow and red lights the sky on the east coast of the island. The eruption is not endangered settlements, which are located at the foot of the mountains - the evacuation was not required, as the volcano still high pillar of smoke and ash does not pose immediate danger to people.

Local airport Fontanarossa, which is located 5 km south of Catania, continued to work as usual, but as a precaution to fly air zone was closed near the volcano.

Resumption of volcanic activity of Mount Etna was preceded by a series of small eruptions. Last southeast crater "wake up" on Oct. 26.

The largest eruption of Etna occurred March 11, 1669. It lasted until July, according to other sources - until November, accompanied by numerous earthquakes. The largest cone formed near the town of Nicolosi, clearly visible on the side of the volcano so far - it is known as Red Mountain. Lava flows completely changed the configuration shore. According to various sources, were killed and 100 000 people.
