Dmitriev Day – 2018 The story of the Holy Great Martyr Dmitry of Thessaloniki is unique and very unusual in its own way. He was the son of a Roman proconsul in Thessaloniki. His parents secretly professed Christianity and secretly baptized their son. When Dmitri came of age, his father died. Then the emperor summoned the young man to him and, convinced of his abilities, appointed a proconsul in the place of his father.

Among other things, the proconsul was responsible for exterminating Christians. But the young man sincerely believed in the teaching of Christ, so instead of persecution and executions, he began to openly preach Christianity and eradicate paganism. Having learned about this, the emperor decided to deal with the Christians of Solun and Dmitry himself.

Arriving in the city, the emperor ordered the preacher to be imprisoned. At dawn on October 26 (November 8, according to the new style), 306 soldiers came to the underground prison of the prisoner and pierced him with spears. Dimitri’s body was thrown away for savage beasts, but the Christians of Solun secretly buried him.

Hundreds of years later, during the construction of the temple, the incorruptible relics of the saint were found on this site. In Russia, the veneration of Dmitry Solunsky began immediately after baptism. The saint built temples and monasteries. He was loved and respected by the people, as he is now.
