Why Americans are amazed at our curtains

Long curtains - familiar to us element of the interior in any apartment or private house. It seems that it can't be otherwise. How else to hide from the scorching sun or from the prying eyes of the neighbors?

However, in other countries of the world, curtains on windows seem something unusual and amazing. And today we propose to talk about the attitude of foreigners to these functionally decorative window curtains.

Once rented an apartment to an American girl named Paola, who came to study with us. When she saw the curtains, she wondered, “Why are you hanging cloth on the windows?” It’s such a local tradition, isn’t it? says Sergey.

The man tried to explain that the curtains we really are very popular, and needed mainly so that people from the street did not look into the apartment. To which the foreign visitor was even more surprised, they say, why would anyone do this at all.

Indeed, in the United States, it is considered inadmissible to look into other people’s windows and be so brazenly interested in the lives of other people. And yes, curtains are easy to do here. Except that as a decor, windows can be covered with a thin transparent tulle.

Instead of curtains, Americans are very happy to use blinds. This element of the interior perfectly protects from the scorching sun and is very popular here.

Why do Americans use blinds and not our favorite curtains? Blinds protect well from the sun, but still let the room and light and air. In addition, they are convenient to use, because they do not take up much space.

Of course, curtains can be found in the United States. But most often this element of the interior is found in the houses and apartments of our people who simply moved to America to live.

Interestingly, Paola was surprised by the flat walls and ceilings. The fact is that American apartments that are rented out are usually lined from the inside with noise insulation material. Therefore, flat and smooth walls here can only dream.

But the window sills of the foreign guest liked. There was a wonderful view of the city. Here you can grow flowers, read a book or watch passers-by. Paola complained that there is no such thing in her home country, because the walls of American houses are usually too thin to equip a window sill.

I also liked the washing machine. After all, in the United States you have to use laundry, which is almost everywhere. But washing machines are put only in private homes, but not in cramped apartments.

Today there are many options for what replace curtains. Someone installs shutters and buys retro furniture, someone chooses Roman blinds or roll curtains, and someone uses stained glass or pastes glass with a special film with patterns. But still beautiful curtains remain the most popular and probably the best option for decorating windows. Isn't that right?
