Painted churches in Romania

Painted churches in Romania is one of the biggest prides of this country. In the area of the Romanian city of Suceava, in the Middle ages it was the capital of the Moldavian Principality, in a relatively small area, among the mountains covered with beech and pine forests, scattered over a dozen small monasteries — Moldovita, Voronet, Probota, Putna, Humor, Neamt, arbor.

These once secluded abode glorified today throughout the world due to the phenomenon of the so-called painted churches: the Church of each of these monasteries and the inside, and what is most surprising, on the outside as multicolored carpet covered with frescoes. This is a unique phenomenon in the art world, with its strictly delineated boundaries: geographic (the territory of the Northern Moldova and southern Bukovina), and historically (1522-1547 in the reign of Prince Peter Rares).

Known beyond these historical boundaries are isolated cases of the construction of the "painted churches" were not a continuation of the tradition and testify rather only the admiration of the masters of the new generation before the creations of their predecessors. In the list of UNESCO world heritage site currently includes 8 painted churches, just as there are more than ten. All of them now are active and those that are on the territory of monasteries, and private.
