Glastonbury Tor

Glastonbury tor — a large hill located in Glastonbury, Somerset, England. On the top of the hill is the tower of St. Michael. Tor is a word of Celtic origin that means "hill". This attraction is located in the middle of a plain called the Summerland meadows. Once there were swamps, which were subsequently dried. The hill is a Peninsula, washed on three sides by the waters of the river BRU.

During the early middle ages on top of Thor settled a small community of monks, founded probably in the time of St. Patrick in the middle of the 4th century. Only after 6 centuries there was built a chapel, which was destroyed by a strong earthquake in 1275 and rebuilt in the early 1300's. the Only thing that has survived is the tower of Thor.

There are many myths and legends associated with the summit of Glastonbury tor. It is associated with Avalona, and also with king Arthur. In the 19th century emerged also a legend of Celtic mythology that Thor is associated with the God of the underworld, king of the fairies. Rocky top was introduced as avalon, the entrance to the land of fairies.

From modern myths to highlight the myth of the zodiac of Glastonbury. This astrological sign of gigantic proportions was carved into the land along ancient hill. This theory was put forward in 1927 by Katherine Maltwood, the artist, fascinated by the occult. She suggested that the sign of the zodiac was carved around the Torah about 5 thousand years ago. Now this place is also called the Spiral of Glastonbury. The vast majority of the land covered by the spiral, is under water, but part of it is visible also on the surface.

Glastonbury tor is now protected by the National trust, it is always available for tourists and travelers.
