The Well of the Torah, the Gateway to the Underworld

Washed by Pacific waters, the American state of Oregon is a picturesque territory covered with dense virgin forests, picturesque lakes and beautiful mountain peaks. Due to its western location, which provides luxurious sunsets, it was given another name – “Sunset State”. Many memorable natural attractions can be found on the Oregon coast, but the title of the most impressive deservedly carries a unique education called the Thor Well.

This creation of nature, located on Cape Perpetua in the central part of the coast of Oregon, is a stone funnel several meters deep, which during tides, ebbs or storm winds, when the water surface is cut by raging waves, turns into a real fountain, exploding with millions of salt splashes.

The strongest impression is the water flowing inside the well, creating picturesque landscapes against the background of other attractions of Cape Perpetua and the setting sun. At the same time, the Torah Well becomes like a mysterious gate to the underworld that goes deep to the bottom.

Natural performances begin at the cape about an hour before the tide: rising from the depths, bubbling water rises to a height of six meters and falls back into the funnel, creating enchanting noise effects and visual paintings worthy of the painter’s brush. This fact made the natural formation a place of pilgrimage for photographers from all over the world. Despite the danger that an unpredictable well carries, brave hunters for good shots approach him at a fairly close distance, although in an instant a large wave can hit the daredevil and wash him into the ocean abyss. Getting to the funnel is very difficult due to the strong wind and wet stones, on which it is very easy to slip.

The landscapes of the Oregon Cape acquire special drama in winter, when the intensity of tides reaches its maximum. During such powerful movements of water masses, the spray can reach observers standing at a distance of ten meters from the edge of the ocean.

The name of the Torah Well is due to an ancient legend. According to legend, many, many years ago in this place met a couple in love. But once their idyll was broken – the girl was jealous of her lover and took his life. God Thor, who saw everything from heaven, in anger turned the blood of a young man into red-hot lava, symbolizing the fervor of his love, which burned a deep hole in the ground, carrying the body of a dead young man into the bowels of the planet. To this day, there is a hole in the ground, reminding people of the destructive power of jealousy, which can destroy even the most sincere and bright feelings.

Surprisingly, until now, scientists have not come to a consensus explaining the origin of the funnel, and have not studied what is in its depths. Scuba divers do not risk diving into an unknown abyss, since a strong current can carry into the network of underwater caves, with which the well is most likely connected. Such a dark mystery Thor Well attracts to the coast of Oregon a huge number of curious travelers from all over the world.

Not far from the Oregon pearl is the Cape Perpetua Visitor Centre, which offers an observation deck where you can enjoy views of the Pacific coast bordering the North American state. There, tourists are warned about the danger posed by the main local attraction. Employees of the center strongly recommend not to approach the coast during intense tides.

Located in the northwest of the United States, the mysterious natural formation can be reached by driving on highway 101 (Oregon Coast Hwy). The closest cities to the Thor Well are Florence (35 km) and Waldport (43 km). Bus communication between these cities is not at the highest level, so you should rely on it only as a last resort. It is best to get to Cape Perpetua by rented car.
