Lake Lagrima or disappearing Lake Bashny.Net

Lake Lagrima, also known as the Vanishing Lake, is located on the road to the coast, just a few miles from the seaside town of Ballycastle in Ireland. The lake is situated at a drawdown of the Cretaceous platform, the bottom of which is a hole, often filled with peat. The lake can quickly fill up, especially during heavy rain. When the inlet groundwater well cleaned the lake in a matter of minutes to disappear into the ground. Passers-by who don't know about this effect, might not even know that it ever existed.





Interestingly, the road to Ballinasloe lies directly across the lake, although a modern road is built high enough to avoid flooding, unlike the original. It is possible that even the road engineers who built the road, Lagrima fooled. In the past, this route was frequently under water, sometimes for weeks on end, making crossing quite difficult.









During one of the worst floods in 1898, Colonel John Magee McNeill was in a hurry to catch a train from the city and convinced his coachman to lead a covered wagon with two horses through the lake. When they reached the middle, the cold water has already risen to the level of the bellies of the horses, who began to get nervous. The coachman used the whip, the horse reared and flipped the cart. The Colonel, his coachmen and the horses soon gave way treacherously cold waters. Thus was born one of the legends Lagrima. Since that fateful day many people have reported ghostly carriage with two horses and the military on the lonely shores of Loughareema.
