British man plans to create almost underground oasis park in Abu Dhabi

British designer Thomas Heatherwick has unveiled plans for an incredible semi-underground public park in Abu Dhabi. Al Fayah Park will allow visitors to cool down after the sultry heat of the Emirates and turn the desert into a holiday destination for locals. The extensive park will be crowned with a roof consisting of separate canopies that will be held on columns standing in staggered order.
Al Fayah is a European-style park with grassy hills that are very expensive to maintain and require a lot of water. And water in the UAE is literally worth its weight in gold. Therefore, to prevent the abuse of the precious resource, Heatherwick developed a complex design of interconnected canopies that mimic the cracked surface of the desert. The canopies will cover the central stream from the scorching sun, which feeds plants, trees, hills covered with green grass, and vegetable gardens throughout the park, which will stretch over 125,000 square meters.

The park will provide visitors with more than just recreational areas. It will also house a public library, a mosque, an outdoor cinema and a stage for various events. All this will also be located under the canopies. The park is designed as an underground oasis to provide cool shade and protection from the hot sun of the desert. During the cooler hours, the canopies will be used as observation decks overlooking Abu Dhabi.
