Schizophrenia

Scientists at the University of Bonn and King's College London found that a person deprived of sleep, for 24 hours, there are symptoms of schizophrenia.

Dr. Ulrich Oettinger says: It was clear that a sleepless night leads to a disturbance in the ability to concentrate. But we were surprised by how pronounced and how wide the spectrum of schizophrenia symptoms was.” An international team of researchers noted that after 24 hours of sleep deprivation in healthy patients, there were numerous symptoms that are usually present in patients with psychosis or schizophrenia: hallucinations, delusions, thinking disorders and delusions.

Scientists examined 24 healthy people, aged 18-40 years. In the initial period, the subjects had to sleep normally in the laboratory. Then they stayed awake all night: watching movies, having conversations, playing and walking. The next morning, they were interviewed about their thoughts and feelings. In addition, patients were measured for prepulse inhibition. We did not expect the symptoms to be so severe after one night without sleep. However, experts reassured: after restoring sleep, the symptoms disappear.
