Scientists have learned to produce diamonds from the contained carbon dioxide in the air
Carbon is ideal for creating durable and lightweight materials, but, in addition, it is the main cause of imminent environmental disaster. What if we removed from the atmosphere the excess CO2 and used them for the production of cheap fuselages for aircraft, modern vehicles and artificial diamonds? This is what a group of researchers from the University of George Washington. The result of their work will not only provide a source of cheap materials for future engineering projects, but also help save our planet.
The process, proposed by scientists, looks like a normal electrolysis, about which you told me in high school. The main difference is a pair of electrodes drops into the water, and the mixture of molten lithium carbonate and lithium oxide. Passing the chemical reaction efficiently removes CO2 from ambient air, and solid carbon is collected around the electrodes. The researchers were able to configure the system for obtaining carbon nanofibers of different shapes and sizes, which can theoretically be used to create anything. In addition, scientists have been able to run the reaction using solar energy so there are high hopes that this process will significantly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of our planet.
CO2 in the atmosphere is one of the main causes of global climate change; its contents have already exceeded the safe threshold of 350 parts per million set by the UN. Increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere also causes more rapid oxidation of the oceans — I don't think you need to explain why this is bad. The proposed system can efficiently extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and instead of burying it underground, we can create something useful.
Prepared by scientists in the report stated that the proposed process in just ten years will allow to return the atmospheric CO2 levels to preindustrial values. This is a very ambitious application, which will require you to create an installation area of about 940 square kilometers. But let's be honest, if this process will really prove its effectiveness — we'll get exceptionally clean air, not to mention the cars, planes and computers, made from carbon fiber. So let's hope that scientists will be able to fulfill their promises. published
P. S. And remember, only by changing their consumption — together we change the world! ©
