Researchers from Lund University (Sweden) explained how the dyes based on iron work at the molecular level in solar cells. The new findings will accelerate the development of inexpensive and environmentally friendly solar panels. Now the best solar panels used ruthenium is a very rare and expensive item.
The aim in the future to use dyes based on iron in the solar panels. This will make them and "Light catcher"-items cheaper and more environmentally friendly. It is expected that the demand for solar panels will increase significantly.
"In this study, we explained how dyes based on iron at the molecular level. Thus, we can change the panels so that they become even better to absorb solar energy," said senior lecturer Petter Persson.
For many decades researchers from around the world have tried to develop such dyes, but to no avail. The biggest challenge is to achieve the desired electronic properties of the dyes based on iron. All previous attempts have led to the result, when the panel generates heat instead of potential difference, which is a necessary condition to generate electricity.
"There is international interest in our research. Research groups around the world seek to test new dyes in other areas," says Petter Persson.
Further testing will take several years before the design goes into commercial production. published
