New York. Empire State Building

During his New Year's trip to America photographer Mikhail Arkhipov visited New York.

Empire State Building - 102-storey skyscraper, located in Manhattan. From 1931 to 1972, before the opening of the North Tower of the World Trade Center was the tallest building in the world. In 2001, when the towers collapsed World Trade Center, Empire State Building again became the tallest building, but only to the extent of New York.

The tower got its name from the names of everyday American state of New York, which is called "Empire State." The tower's name can also be translated as "House of the Empire." Construction began in January 1930, and the building was opened May 1, 1931. At the construction site worked 3,400 workers.

At the beginning of operation of the building its spire intended to use as a mooring mast for dirigibles. 102nd floor was berthing platform with similar lifting on the airship. Special lift running between the 86th and 102nd floors, could be used to transport passengers. However, the idea of the air terminal was declared insolvent because of security reasons (the strong and unstable air flow at the top of the building did berthing very complex, and after the first attempt, it became clear that this idea is utopian).

July 28th, 1945 Bomber US Air Force B-25s crashed in thick fog in the northern facade of the building between 79 and 80 th floors. One of the engines broke through the tower and fell on the adjacent building, another fell into the elevator shaft. The incident killed 14 people. Lifter Betty Lou Oliver survived after falling from a height in the elevator 75 floors.

The building has a height of 443 m 2 to the top of the spire and 381 meters to the roof. With 86 floors and 102 is an observation deck, which you can get to the bottom of buying a ticket at the entrance to the building.
