Vevcani Carnival
Every year in the Macedonian village of Vevcani a carnival, whose history goes back centuries, even in pre-Christian times. Today Carnival coincides with the celebration of the beginning of the New Year according to the Julian calendar.
Also, this day coincides with the Orthodox holiday - the day of St. Basil. In this day and the night, the carnival participants wear scary masks and fun. All this echoes the distant times of the Gentiles, a kind of ritual. Over time, a purely religious items were replaced by more relevant and participants even add elements ridiculing politicians, as well as modern society's problems. In principle, even the foundation of Carnival formed political satire.
