Wonders of Antarctica

Whaling base, research facilities and military bases - before these objects were widely used by people. Now it is all left neglected.
Antarctica is the most inhospitable continent in our overpopulated planet: freezing temperatures down to -60 Celsius, night, lasting six months, strong winds on the planet reaching a speed of 300 km / h. However, in the XX-th century the continent actively trying to explore, to learn to live even scientists, military or fishermen. There were even attempts to use the land for commercial purposes.

However, many facilities built by researchers are in a derelict state - the icy continent is littered with the remains of human dwellings.

Resource WebUrbanist compiled a list of the seven wonders of Antarctica abandoned. Many of the objects remind habitats ghosts.

All alone

In 1958, Soviet scientists have created a research station in the very heart of the continent, near the south pole.

Today stations almost completely fell under a layer of snow. Only a bust of Lenin recalls the brave Soviet researchers.

The effects of depression

On the island of Deception (Deception) is an abandoned fishing base of the American private company. In the 20s of the last century the Chilean and Norwegian ships are actively selling their catch, which then went to the United States.

Unfortunately, the Great Depression of the bankrupt companies, fishery products which are no longer in demand. Now this place is abandoned.

Disbanded base Allied

In 1939, the Antarctic Division has established its base on the island of Stonington, where a year later they were joined by the British and built their research and military bases.

However, the harsh climate and lack of benefit from this base have forced the British and Americans to leave these places in 1975 forever.

British Army in the early nineties was trying to completely demolish the entire database, but the case never came - the database itself is falling apart under the influence of natural forces

Grytviken

In 1904, on the island of South Georgia it was built factory ship and the small village of 300 people called Grytviken. All residents were employed in the processing of whale catch: fat (blubber), meat, whalebone, and spermaceti.

However, over-fishing of whales has led to a sharp decline catastrophically their populations in this region. The decision to ban the further destruction of whales has led to the closure of the station in 1966. Now this place is visited only by tourists.

Base W

The US base W on the island of details was based meteorological and geological research in 1956. But three years later, it was abandoned.

Port of Leith

Built in 1909, this station was the largest whaling center on the planet. At the height of his fame base could not afford to build a library, a cinema and a hospital. But because of the tightening of the rules of whaling forced people to leave the base in 1965.
