The ability of living organisms

Bioluminescence - the ability of living organisms of light reaching their own or with the help of symbionts. The name comes from the Greek word "bios" meaning life, and the Latin word "lumen" - light. Light is created in more highly developed organisms in special luminous bodies in unicellular eukaryotes - in special organelles and bacteria - in the cytoplasm. Bioluminescence is based on the chemical processes in which the liberated energy is released in the form of light. Thus, bioluminescence is a special form of chemiluminescence.

There are about 800 species of luminous beings. Most of them live in the sea.
