How to Choose a Winter Jacket

A few years ago, manufacturers of outerwear used two types of fillers in the winter jackets: natural down-per and synthetic polyester-based synthepone. Alas, they are famous for their terrible impracticality. They were replaced by more durable and high-quality materials.

Only those who have never washed jackets protect them. Even the use of working life hacks during washing will not prolong their life. Feathers get knocked down and stick out of the seams, such a down jacket does not warm well and looks unattractive.

Modern insulation Thin and dense, well pass air and create a long feeling of comfort at a wide range of temperatures. In other words, sometimes a thin jacket warms better than a thick and long down jacket. It's a lot cheaper! Another undeniable advantage in favor of synthetics is the ethical attitude towards animals.

In this article, we will look in detail at all the well-known insulation for winter clothing. Each has its own disadvantages and advantages. There is a difference in the use and care of such products. Expensive does not mean that it will be warm. Think twice before buying a jacket.

Winter jacket fillers
  1. Isosoft (Isosoft)

It is a modern and the most popular European insulation. It has a high thermal insulating ability, very light and soft. It is twice as warm as conventional synthetic insulation, easily restores shape after compression and does not lose it after numerous washes. Does not cause allergies, retains heat, is easily washed.

  2. Primaloft (PrimaLoft)

Modern insulation made of very thin polyester fibers. Due to its softness and rather dense structure, it provides good thermal insulation properties at low weight. It is not clothing that warms, but the warm layer of air that it creates. Therefore, if you fall in the rain in a down coat, you will freeze, because the air between the feathers disappears.

PrimaLoft fibers are very durable and do not allow moisture to seep through the insulation. Resistant to gusts of cold wind, but do not prevent the removal of moisture from the body.

  3. Thermolite (Thermolite)

It's a synthetic fiber with a hollow structure. Perfectly removes moisture on the outer layer of clothing, and does not absorb it. It is also used for thermostats.

  4. Tinsulate (Thinsulate)

Very common filler. It is even thinner than the previous two, its fiber is ten times thinner than a human hair! It retains more air and in less volume than most other heaters. A thin layer of this filler is enough to create a sense of comfort.

  5. syntepon

This is a nonwoven synthetic fiber with a large volume. When washed, this filler shrinks. Repeated washing of synthetic products compresses fibers, so this material is short-lived. Modern technologies allow you to add other synthetic substances to syntepon, which improve the original characteristics.

  6. Hollofeiber

It's a high-silicone syntepone with twisted fibers empty inside. Sometimes in stores it is called biopuh, hollofan, thermofiber, firetech. The name depends only on the manufacturer, there are no significant differences in manufacturing technology and characteristics. Hollofiber fiber structure resembles animal hair, so it is very warm and light.

  7. Topsfil (Topsfil) Modern insulation, which due to its structure is able to straighten fibers with a decrease in temperature. Perfectly passes air and removes moisture from the body. Very light and airy, so it is used in the creation of children's "breathing" clothes. After compression, it quickly returns to its former form.

  8. Membrane

Although the membrane is not quite jacket-fillerWe couldn't help but mentioning her. This is a modern multilayer material resembling a film, which is glued according to a special technology to the upper fabric of the product.

This film has many holes-pores all over the surface, so water does not pass through them. The membrane is used in clothes for outdoor activities, standing in such a jacket in the cold will be very cold. It is the heat that is left under the jacket.

Wearing a membrane, you need to observe three-layer clothing. The first layer is thermal underwear made of wool or synthetic to remove moisture from the body. The second is warming, which prevents the body from cooling down. This is a tight sweater made of natural wool or synthetic materials. The latter include fleece, polartec. The second layer of clothing will warm you with the help of an air layer that will not release heat.

And the third layer is the membrane product itself. It is important and the upper material, which should not pass the wind and not absorb moisture.

Caring for synthetic insulation Almost all recommendations are identical. Maybe. type-wash, but not more than 800 rpm and with minimal pressing. For membrane jackets and thermal underwear, special means for washing sportswear are used, which do not damage their structure. It's forbidden to iron! Check the nuances of care on the product labels.

Now choose. jacket-filler It won't be difficult. Personally, I choose isosoft and membrane. If you have already bought a beautiful down jacket, our useful tips will help to keep it in a decent form after washing!
