Ordering seeds from Holland, checking for germination and anticipating generous sprouts

The fact that seeds are bought in a specialized store is not always a guarantee of their germination. In order not to face an unpleasant surprise in the spring, it is important to know how to independently check the seeds for germination.

This method is suitable primarily for determining the germination of those seeds that germinate within a few weeks and are not retarded.

Place the seeds on a saucer between two wet wipes or cosmetic discs. Cover the saucer with film and leave in a dark place at a temperature of 20-30 degrees. Check the napkin from time to time and moisten with water if it is dry.

The first sprouts appear, as a rule, in 7-14 days. Cabbage seeds, pumpkin seeds, tomatoes can germinate earlier. More time will be needed seeds of carrots, parsley, onions, dill.

The germination rate of seeds is affected by their processing. So, shop seeds usually germinate longer. This is because sellers dry them for better storage.

To assess the germination of seed material, you need to calculate the percentage of sprouted seeds. If 22 out of 30 sprouted, then 73% sprouted (22/30*100=73.33).

It is believed that if the germination is more than 50%, then such seeds can be considered suitable for planting. The germination of more than 80% is considered excellent and indicates the excellent quality of the seed material.

This method is often used to check the germination of cabbage seeds, radish, cucumbers and tomatoes.

You will need a container with a 5% solution of table salt (1 teaspoon per liter of water). Put the seeds in it and wait 30 minutes. Those that have fallen to the bottom are ready to sow.

Knowing how to check the seeds, and determining the percentage of their germination, you can fully meet the sowing season. For seeds with a germination of about 50%, the sowing rate will need to be doubled. Seeds, the germination of which is below 30%, according to experts, it is impractical to sow.
