A new technology bystrotverdejushchie, non-flammable batteries

A group of researchers under the guidance of the inventor of the lithium-ion battery, John Goodenough developed a new type of batteries which have more power and charge faster.

Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin has developed a fully solid-state batteries that can be safer and more effective alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

During the experiments, the batteries with solid elements demonstrated the energy intensity three times higher than the capacity of the lithium-ion counterparts. These batteries charge faster, can withstand temperatures up to -20°C and do not harm the environment for their production is rather expensive lithium can be used sodium, which is extracted from sea water.

"Cost, safety, energy consumption, charging rate and duration of battery use — all critically important factors for further spread of electric vehicles. We believe that our invention will help to solve many problems that are present in modern batteries," - said John Goodenough, Professor in the University of Texas at Austin, the inventor of the lithium-ion batteries and supervisor of studies.

Modern lithium-ion batteries use liquid electrolyte that transports lithium ions between the anode and the cathode. If the battery charge too quickly, in a liquid electrolyte formed of lithium processes, which can cause a short circuit and ignition of the battery.

In the new type of batteries proposed by the team of Professor Goodenough (this year an outstanding scientist turns 95 years), the electrolyte used glass. It allows to use as the anode of alkaline metals (e.g. lithium, sodium or potassium) without the formation of shoots and, consequently, without risk of igniting the battery.
