It is proved that green LEDs have a soothing effect

Scientists at the University of Arizona discovered a new, drug-free method of treating chronic pain with green LEDs. Method, explanations which have not yet found, already tested on rodents and will soon be held clinical trials.

From chronic pain only in the United States affects more than 100 million people, and for their health spent several hundred billion dollars a year. Usually doctors prescribe against chronic pain medication or recommend surgery. Opioids, coping well with the task, bear serious side effects. "We need more safe, effective and affordable method that could be used together with other approaches to relieve patients from chronic pain. Although the results of the use of green LEDs are only preliminary, they have great potential," says Mohab Ibrahim, lead author of the study.

During testing, two groups of rats with neuropathic pain were exposed to green light. However, one of the groups put transparent contact lens that is blocking the green spectrum. In these rats, light exposure did not have. The second group showed a reduction of pain effect when exposed to temperature and tactile stimuli.

"Although the analgesic effect of the green LEDs is obvious, the nature of this phenomenon remains a mystery, says Rajesh Khanna, Professor of pharmacology. Early studies have shown that green light increases the level of endogenous opioids, which may explain the analgesic effect. Will there be the same people, is still unknown and requires further study." This is what scientists are doing now, conducting clinical trials on patients with fibromyalgia, a common cause of chronic pain.

Virtual reality can also be an effective pain reliever, according to doctors at Stanford. According to their idea even the acute pain can be alleviated by redirecting the focus of attention. If you overfill the brain of sensory impulses, for example, immersed in a virtual world, its ability to emit pain signals are reduced.
