Scientists found 100 genes responsible for schizophrenia
An international team of scientists, with more than 300 people from 35 countries, the study in Cardiff University have identified more than 100 genes associated with schizophrenia.
Lead author Professor Michael O'donovan said: "We were able to detect genetic risk factors in a huge, unprecedented scale and shed new light on the biological causes of this condition." Comparing the genetic data of healthy people and patients with schizophrenia, scientists have identified 108 segments of DNA associated with the disease. Some of the genes have been found in the brain, but some of them are actively present in the immune system. According to the researchers, "the key task is to take a fresh look at diagnostic tools and to find new treatments and, finally, to end 60-year wait people suffering in the world."
