Costa Rica completely switched to renewable energy

Costa Rica is a small country with a population of about 5 million people. This year it was entirely on renewable energy. In 2014, the hydropower plants of the country produced about 80% of all electricity consumed. In addition to hydro-power plants (both conventional dams and pumped storage plants) in Costa Rica uses wind, solar and geothermal energy.

Last year, the authorities approved an ambitious project costing $950 million, which will accelerate the introduction of new technologies to use the energy of volcanoes and convert it into electricity. It is planned the construction of three geothermal power plants, using the heat of volcanoes. The capacity of each power plant would be approximately 50 MW.

It is worth noting that Costa Rica was the first country in the world, which is 100% self-sufficient in renewable energy: this indicator reached the island of Bonaire, an overseas territory of the Netherlands in the Caribbean.published
