'The Alternative': The Brake That Will Make Firearms Less Lethal

Shooting policemen in the legs or hands of criminals is a fairly common phenomenon on the screens of numerous detective films and action films.

But in fact, everything is quite different, in training centers, police train to hit the target in the center of its mass, if possible without killing a person, but the outcome of such shooting in most cases leads to death.

An alternative solution to this problem is a device with the consonant name “The Alternative”, which is something like a “airbag” for semi-automatic weapons, which slows down the speed of the bullet, increases the impact area, making these weapons less deadly.

The Alternative is a device developed by Alternative Ballistics, a California company. The basis of the device is a plastic sphere, some of which is in a special bag on the belt of the policeman.

The device, which corresponds to the shape of the muzzle box of a semi-automatic pistol, is designed in such a way that it can be mounted with one hand and “blind”, without taking your eyes off the surrounding space. Mounting "The Alternative" absolutely does not interfere with the mechanism of the gun and does not affect the work of its additional shell, for example, a laser sight.

In front of the bright orange fastening, a plastic sphere is fixed on four pins, inside of which there is a soft alloy core. It is this core that catches the bullet after it leaves the gun barrel.

The whole system slows down the speed of the bullet by 80 percent, but the remaining speed is enough for the core of the ball with the bullet to penetrate shallowly into the tissues of a person, and a large impact area provides a large stopping force that can knock the criminal down and deprive him of consciousness for a while.

In case of failure, after the first non-lethal shot with the device “The Alternative”, the police officer has the opportunity to immediately fire the next shots, which will already carry a mortal danger to the suspect. And, if the police officer did not have to use a weapon, the brake "The Alternative" is easily removed from the gun and returns to the bag on the belt.
