The fortress was built in 1780-1790 gg. The fortress was involved in combat operations during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866-1867 Since the end of the XIX century in the fortress as a prison, which in the years of the First World War was used as a camp for prisoners of war. It was in Terezin died of tuberculosis Gavrilo Princip. During World War II Terezin it was founded "model ghetto", which was a little less than 140 000 people (of which 33 000 have died while in the ghetto). The German authorities regarded as the temporary location of the Terezin Jews until the "final solution", so about 88,000 inhabitants of Terezin were gradually deported to Auschwitz (Auschwitz) and other death camps. By the end of the war in the ghetto there were 17,247 survivors.
Part of the castle was separated from the ghetto and served as a Gestapo prison through which during the war was about 90 000 people, of whom 2,600 died there. Terezin was liberated by Soviet troops May 9, 1945.
