Aogashima – town inside an active volcano

About 230 years ago, the eruption killed nearly half the population of the city. But people continue to live here and hope for the best.

1785 forever preserved in the memory of the inhabitants Aogashima – a small island three hundred miles South of Tokyo. In this year occurred the worst disaster in the history of the island. And though its current inhabitants weren't born yet, the memory of this event is passed from mouth to mouth.

According to legend, on 18 may, the earth began to tremble. From the crater of the volcano billowed a giant cloud of gas and smoke, to heaven flying rocks, mud and other debris. By the beginning of June 4, residents saw the need to leave the island, but only half of the 327 people were able to evacuate successfully, the rest died.

Currently, the volcano is still considered active. For it is the observation of the Japan meteorological Agency, responsible for monitoring of all active volcanoes in Japan. The current population of the island knows that history may repeat itself, but prefers to take risks.

One of these brave men is a civil servant Masanobu Yoshida, living on the island for the past fifteen years. He tries not to spend too much time thinking about the possibility of a new eruption. In the end, since it's been 230 years, so the odds are in his favor.

"No one can defeat nature," says Yoshida. So instead of thinking about probabilities, he prefers to focus on the advantages of living in a lush Paradise, which was formed from the remnants of four overlapping craters centuries ago. Most of the settlement is located inside the external walls of the funnel.

Since the island is surrounded by the Philippine sea, fishing is a very popular activity among locals. They also are fond of climbing, Hiking and swimming, although steep rocky cliffs of the Islands complicate the approach to water everywhere except the harbour.

Thanks to the volcano, the island is rich in hot springs and geothermal energy. One of the tourists field visit the natural sauna so described his impressions: "You can bring food with you to prepare, just placing on top of one of the steam holes." In the sauna there is always ready a large number of pots and pans for cooking boiled eggs and other eatables.

Although Yoshida works in the office, most of his neighbors, fishermen and farmers. On the island there is a factory rich in calcium salts, a few shops, hotel, garage. Residents grow herbs and vegetables and produce Shochu – a strong alcoholic drink, which is one of the national symbols of Japan. Despite the small size of the island, most residents prefer to travel not on foot or by Bicycle, and by car, as due to tropical climate the weather is often a surprise in the form of a strong wind or unexpected rain.

On the island there are several roads, mostly winding around the center of the island. But, despite oases of urban life, Aogashima stark contrast with the main part of Japan. On duty Yoshida may occur several times a year to visit Tokyo, performing trehsotmetrovoy the journey by sea on the ferry. During these visits, the 13-million city he feels is

"I often visit the mainland on business, but I am afraid of overpopulation – there are simply too many people," he says. – On our island we can feel the greatness of nature, which you will never feel in a big city".

Fortunately for Yoshida and his neighbors, the volcano remains calm. The Japan meteorological Agency since 2007 began to issue warnings about volcanic activity, and in these 9 years for Aogashima there were no alerts.
