Researchers have discovered a protein that increases the ability of the brain.

Manipulation of a gene that boosts intelligence could give new hope to everyone suffering from dementia.
The study, funded by the us National Institute of health, found the protein klotho, which increases brain skills such as thinking, learning and memory.Dan Dabolim, Professor and lead author, said: "This could be an important step to help millions worldwide suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. If we could increase the brain's ability to function, we would be able to resist dementia". Discovered protein could raise IQ up to six points — whatever the age of the person.

University of California Lennart Macke: "Our results suggest that klotho may increase the capacity of the brain to perform everyday intellectual tasks". People who have one variant or form of the gene klotho (KL-VS), tend to live longer and have lower chances of a stroke whereas people who have two copies or none at all to live on less and have a higher risk of stroke.

In the study, researchers found that people who had one variant KL-VS, performed better on cognitive tests than those who don't have it, regardless of age, gender.
