In the midst of World War II, the Middle East Administration of Relief and Refugees (Middle East Relief and Refugee Administration, or MERRA) operated camps in Syria, Egypt and Palestine, where thousands of refugees to seek refuge in Europe.





Organization MERRA was part of a rapidly growing network of camps for refugees around the world that are managed jointly by national governments, military officials, local and international humanitarian organizations.





International Migration Service, the Red Cross, Save the Children Fund and other organizations have coordinated efforts to help MERRA, and later the United Nations, to manage camps for refugees in which Europeans live.
