In the first few hours began to arrive at the plant nuclear scientists and specialists for fire emergency. All of them later and named - the liquidators. In the danger zone they worked in shifts. Those who scored the maximum permissible dose of radiation, left, and in their place come the other. But in the beginning nobody knew how dangerous radioactive contamination. It was necessary first of all to extinguish the fire that the fire did not spread to other units. If that happened, the disaster would be planetary.

Pennant, dedicated to the heroes of Chernobyl.

There were 28 - firemen of Chernobyl, the first to come to grips with the nuclear element, to assume the heat of the flames and deadly breath reactor Vladimir Pravik Victor Kibenok Leonid Telyatnikov Nicholas Vashchuk, Vasily Ignatenko, Vladimir Tishura Nicholas Titenok Boris Alishayev Ivan Butrimenko Mikhail Golovnenko Anatoly Haharov Stjepan Komar, Andrew King, Michael Krys'ko Victor Legun Sergei Legun Anatoly Naydyuk Nikolay Nechiporenko Vladimir Palachega, Aleksandr Petrovsky, Peter Pivovarov, Andrei Polovinkin, Vladimir Prischepa, Vladimir Prischepa Nikolai Rudenyuk Gregory Hops, Ivan Shavrey Leonid Shavrey. Their feat is only a great landmark events for the sake of the world and people all over the planet. They saved they overshadowed all of us. Six of them - at the cost of his life.

The deadly fight fire with fire to take. In just seven minutes after the alarm at the plant fire brigades arrived. He commanded them major of internal service Leonid Telyatnikov. Beside him in the front ranks of firefighters were commanders of the fire guard 23-year-old lieutenant of internal service Viktor Kibenok Vladimir Pavlovich Pravik. By their example, they are fascinated by the fighters, give clear commands, we went back to where it was most dangerous. Firefighters have made a real feat - took trouble, saved thousands of lives. But the radiation dose received a brave officer, was very high.

Lieutenant Victor Kibenko and Vladimir Pravik posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Golden Star of the Hero was awarded Leonid Telyatnikov. After treatment, he continued to serve, became a general. But the disease is not retreating. Hero died in 2004.

Let's go back again in the tragic days of Chernobyl. What were the case after the first fire repulsed the blow?

Soldiers fire brigade continued their military work. Watch at the shooting range took the combined forces of fire departments across the country. Led by their actions the lieutenant colonel of internal service Vladimir Maksimchuk.

On the night of May 23 at the plant re-emerged a dangerous situation. The outbreak of the fire crept to the computer room, filled with tons of oil and pipelines, which was hydrogen. The slightest delay could lead to a terrible explosion. Assessing the situation, Maximchuk chose the only correct in that situation extinguishing method. Firefighters entered the danger zone units of five people working there are not more than 10 minutes, and then they were immediately replaced by another unit. Himself Vladimir nearly 12 hours is not out of the fire zone and already giving the last of his strength, he made a calculation of foam attack that finished off the remaining pockets of fire.

He was named a Hero of the Soviet Union and called (though this title he did not have), the hero of Chernobyl; and in the international community of firefighters styled "hero of the world».

Presidential Decree № 1493 of December 18, 2003. Vladimir Maksimchuk Hero of Russia posthumously. General Maksymchuk - the only hero of Russia among firefighters honored with this award in peacetime.

Later, doctors determined: in these dramatic hours, Lieutenant Colonel Maximchuk got ultra-high dose of radiation - about 700 X-rays. With severe radiation burns, he was taken to the hospital. For a long time there was a struggle for the life of the officer, but as soon as Vladimir felt better and returned to duty. In 1989, he led the liquidation of a large fire at a chemical plant in the Lithuanian town of Jonava. In 1992, by then Major-General Internal Service, headed by the Moscow fire department. In spite of the severe form of radiation sickness (a consequence of Chernobyl), Vladimir continued to work hard. With him in the capital of the first in the Russian helicopter Fire and Rescue Service, a special unit to extinguish the largest and most dangerous fires, fire departments received modern rescue equipment, open training center for fire professionals, fully modernized service «01».

May 22, 1994, Vladimir Mikhailovich died. In the name of the brave officer named school, a fire boat and specialized fire department N2, where he began his service in Moscow. Since 1994, the international competitions on fire and applied sport to the general Maksimchuka Cup.
