Imagine for a moment a deep Sarov forest. Not a hiking trail, but a real, wild thicket, where the air smells of eternity, and silence rings in your ears. It was here, far from the worldly vanity, in a small cell, that lived a man who became a spiritual beacon for thousands – Seraphim of Sarov. People did not make an appointment with him through a secretary, they walked to him for weeks, carrying their pain in their hearts, whether it was a bodily ailment, mental turmoil or a dead end in fate. And he, this amazing old man, saw through people – not with an X-ray, but with his heart.
In the XXI century, we are used to looking for the causes of diseases in viruses, genetics and bad ecology. We take tests, do MRI and trust the readings of fitness bracelets. But what if the root of our ailments lies much deeper, in that invisible universe called the soul? Seraphim of Sarov, centuries ahead of modern psychologists, asserted that diseases have only three root causes. And they have nothing to do with seasonal epidemics.
The saint called despondency "rust of the heart." This is not just a bad mood or autumn blues. This is an existential anguish, a deep feeling that everything is meaningless and in vain. When a person plunges into this state, he voluntarily disconnects himself from the source of vital energy. Joy, in the opinion of the elder, is not a bonus, but a spiritual discipline, an obligation.
"My joy, acquire a peaceful spirit, and then thousands around you will be saved."
Modern science, armed with microscopes and tomographs, in fact, confirms his words. A state of chronic gloom and stress causes our adrenal glands to produce cortisol, the "hormone of death." It weakens the immune system, leaving us vulnerable to everything from colds to much more serious illnesses. The body, devoid of joy, seems to say: "If the master does not want to live, why should I fight?"
The second reason is the internal poison that we prepare for others, but drink ourselves. Anger, envy, and resentment are not just emotions. These are the most powerful biochemical reactions that destroy us from the inside. Imagine a person who has been replaying a dialogue with the offender in his head for years, each time adding fuel to the fire of his rage. His heart is pounding, his blood pressure is jumping, his blood vessels are narrowing. He lives in "fight or flight" mode, even sitting in a cozy chair.
Seraphim of Sarov said: "Do not let evil into the heart, it will settle there like a weed and will displace all living things." Medical research confirms this: people with a high level of hostility are many times more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases. Resentment is a heavy, radioactive stone that we carry in our pocket, wondering why we develop radiation sickness.
Once a woman who suffered from migraines and stomach problems came to a famous psychologist. Medications did not help. After a long conversation, it turned out that she had not been in touch with her sister for twenty years because of a long-standing quarrel. The psychologist gave her a "recipe": to write a letter to her sister. Not for sending, but for yourself. A letter in which she will throw out all the pain and... Forgive. The woman sobbed while she was writing. And a week later, her migraines were gone. She let go of her poison.
This is perhaps the most difficult reason for a modern person. By "sin" the saint understood not a formal violation of church rules, but actions that run counter to conscience, to the inner law of truth. Living in a lie, betrayal, deception, living not after one's heart – all this creates the deepest inner conflict, what psychologists call cognitive dissonance.
"God is not the cause of evil... Most often, we bring ourselves to a state of distress."
When our actions contradict our values, the soul is in constant tension. This split, this crack in the foundation of the personality, is inevitably projected onto the body. Illness in this case is not a punishment from above. It's a desperate SOS signal from our body that screams, "Stop! You're going the wrong way! What you do destroys you!" This can manifest itself in the form of insomnia, autoimmune diseases, unexplained pains - the body is looking for any way to get through to consciousness.
The teaching of Seraphim of Sarov is strikingly modern. It tells us that health is not the absence of symptoms, but integrity. Harmony between thoughts, feelings, actions and body. Illness is not a failure in the program, but feedback. This is the most honest dialogue that the Universe has with us.
Instead of asking, "Why do I need this disease?", it may be worth asking another question: "Why do I need it? What should I understand? What to get rid of? Which path do I need to choose?"
In the end, the precepts of the elder from the Sarov forest boil down to a simple and ingenious formula:
Perhaps the most important lesson we can learn is that healing does not begin with a pill, but with an honest look within ourselves. It is necessary to treat not only the body, but also the heart.
