The capricious dog bewitched his owner - and he dressed him up in the costume of Gandalf from "The Lord of the Rings". This is just one of the fun costumes that the trio of pugs showcase, transformed into hobbits, rock stars and even members of the reigning dynasty.

Dog owner Phillip Lauer, 57, says: "It's like the family pictures we put on the walls of our house – others do the same with pictures of their children.

Yes, it takes a lot of time and effort, but it gives us pleasant memories and images that we just want to share. Not to mention the smile that lights up faces when you look at them."

Philip and his wife Sue came up with this dress-up game for their dogs Blue, Bono and Roxy six years ago.

It all started with participating in an amateur competition for the best outfit for dogs and making original holiday cards for friends, but soon grew into a full-scale hobby.

The couple even opened a special home studio in Sonoma County, California, for professional photo shoots.

Most of their latest inventions - including their favorite outfit Boromir - were inspired by the trilogy of J. J. R. R. Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings".

They called this series "Pugs of Middle-earth". Other themes include rescue pugs, heavy rock star pugs, and pugs in storm jackets.

When they can't just buy a suit, Sue, 47, who has a degree in fashion design, makes them herself. Sometimes it takes about twenty days to sew a single set.

Philip, IT Specialist, says: "When we decided to take part in bigger and more prestigious dog costume competitions, we had to work hard to come up with and make truly unique sets of clothes and accessories.

We are not looking for easy ways and are constantly looking for something new and original."

"As for which of our dogs is better, all three are good in their own way," says Philip. "Of course, it looks like they are really competing with each other for the palm in front of the camera.

Blue usually demonstrates the most complex costumes, Bono is better at shooting in motion, and Roxy is given a wide choice - from a modest girl to a prima donna.

We love our pets, we love to look at their photos and remember our entire journey together.

Now we have a rather difficult task: we have to decide in which direction to move forward."
