The Indian "Ghost town"

The story of the creation of Fatehpur Sikri has acquired numerous legends. So, one of them, having lost hope of having a son, the Emperor Akbar came here in search of the famous Sufi mystic Sheikh Salim Chishti, who wanted to ask for blessings and assistance. Prayers were answered, and soon the Emperor had a son. Akbar named the Prince Salim, in honour of the mystery, and vowed to build a new city.

So, in 40 km from Agra on the rocky slopes, rose a magnificent new city of Fatehpur Sikri. It only took 15 years to any palaces and temples. Many thousands of craftsmen were brought here to satisfy the whim of the Emperor. People moved here permanently, after all, there had to be the capital of the Empire. Soon arrived and the Palace of the Emperor. Over the course of 16 short but memorable years, he was a miracle, delights guests from all over the world.

It is believed that Fatehpur Sikri was abandoned because it left the water, but the exact cause is unknown. The theory that its water supply was unable to support the life of its population, has not received wide acceptance. Close to town, to the North-West of Fatehpur Sikri, is the lake, reaching up to 20km in circumference. A more likely explanation is that the city fell victim to unforeseen circumstances.
