Memory 3D Xpoint of up to 1,000 times faster than flash memory

Intel and Micron announced a new type of memory technology called 3D XPoint, which according to them, will be able to provide speeds up to 1,000 times faster than current NAND flash memory. The first prototype device with a memory constructed according to the XPoint 3D technology will appear later this year, and this means that we will be able to see the first products on the market that uses 3D XPoint in the next year.

According to Intel and Micron, this is the first entirely new type of memory, which will be released since, as was presented to the NAND memory in 1989.

In that time, as the XPoint 3D much faster NAND flash, it is not as fast as modern memory chips DRAM. But the new memory doesn't use transistors, unlike DRAM, it has a three-dimensional architecture, as the name implies. This allows to obtain more memory for the same area: 3D XPoint is about 10 times denser than DRAM. As well as this memory is non-volatile, so it can store information even when the device is turned off.

Intel says 3D Xpoint offers a cheaper and faster alternative to existing SSD-drives. The new drives will be able to offer not only greater speed but also greater capacity for data storage, at a lower cost.

Intel and Micron also state that 3D Xpoint also has another important advantage: in that time, NAND memory has a limited number of write cycles, the Xpoint 3D no this problem. This means that in theory, the endurance of the drives with the new memory increase up to 1000 times, and speed. But will have to wait until next year, or the end of this to learn about the actual performance and other indicators (including the price) of the product. published
