Have you ever had the moment of falling asleep feel like you are falling into a bottomless abyss, sometimes accompanied by a wince and a revival? Not remember the last time I had it. According to the folk belief that means "make it stop" :-)

 

And what's really going on ?

This is an absolutely normal phenomenon that occurs from time to time with most people. One of the main reasons for this phenomenon experts believe unstable sleep, and explained everything very amusing effect.

Under the so-called REM sleep, our muscles go into a state called atonia. In fact, all of them, excluding the eye muscles and muscles associated with the respiratory system, are temporarily paralyzed. The brain blocks the signals usually sent by the muscular system. This phenomenon is typical not only for humans but for almost all warm-blooded animals.

 





 

This explains the stillness of our body at the time when we dream that we are in motion. This mechanism of self-preservation, which no doubt brings us a big favor, not allowing to Wake themselves and providing a healthy sleep needed for rest and recuperation.

At the time of termination of REM sleep our muscles are awakened from atony and the brain returns to a state of wakefulness about the same time. However, it happens that the awakening of the brain occurs somewhat earlier. That is, we Wake up while still in the "paralysis". This phenomenon is called "sleep paralysis" and its ever in your life experienced about 60 percent of the people.

Of course, this may cause fright, but usually "sleep paralysis" lasts a very short time, sometimes so short that we don't even realize what happened.

This feeling is often described as an acute fear or even horror, sometimes even as a sense of separation from my own body. In some cultures, auditory and visual hallucinations are a feature of mythology and associated with the influence of supernatural forces, demons, aliens and the like. Some even believe that in this state you can open the "door" to another reality and try to learn to stay in it as long as possible.

Walking in a state of "sleep paralysis", if it happens once, is not a cause for concern, but frequent repetition may be a symptom of a more serious problem, such as narcolepsy and in this case definitely should go to the doctor. "Sleep paralysis" happens most frequently when people are in a state of depression and exhaustion, but the doctors don't know why.

It can also occur at the moment of falling asleep. Our brain is still partially awake, but body is paralyzed. That is what "separation of mind and body" can cause a tremendous sensation of falling into the abyss, and is often accompanied by a wince, which doctors call "hypnagogic jerks".
