Safety glass was invented by accident





Safety glass is widely used in the automotive and construction industries. Today, it is everywhere, but when the French scientist (as well as an artist, composer and writer) Edouard Benedictus in 1903, accidentally dropped on the floor empty glass bottle and it did not break his very surprised. As it turned out, before the flask was stored collodion solution, the solution is evaporated, but the vessel walls were covered with a thin layer.

While in France, intensively developed automotive industry, and the windshield was made of ordinary glass, which was the cause of many injuries of drivers, and what drew the attention of Benedictus. He saw a real benefit for saving lives in the use of his invention in cars, but automakers have considered it too expensive to manufacture. It was only years later, when, during the Second World War, triplex (the name given to the new glass) was used as a glass for masks, in 1944 Volvo has applied it in cars.
